Where We’re Going

I feel better now but the same can’t be said about my coworkers so Saturn ODEs will be delayed further. I hope to have better news to share come 2nd week of March or so. But we did manage to get something done – I will have some GDEMUs for sale next week. I will open orders this Saturday.

Now, I need to explain a few things, let’s start with PCE: My device is meant to replace the CD-ROM drive, and only that. If you are looking for something more then there is another solution on the market that basically replaces the whole IF unit and AFAIK even lets you play cart-based games. It’s an interesting (if somewhat expensive) approach but personally I’ve always preferred to leave as much of the original console intact as possible. Because once you start improving and replacing things, where do you stop? But you have a choice now – and I wanted this to be clear as some people expect me to pretty much make the same thing, but cheaper.

With that out of the way let’s talk about FM Towns. Here’s a mockup of how the new ODE fits inside the Marty:

The final product will have black/gold PCB. I would’ve liked to keep the SD card socket at the edge of the PCB but it’s not really possible here – there are some pros and cons of this approach. You need to learn how to remove the card with your fingernail (it’s easy once you figure it out) but at the same time there is less risk of it falling into the console. Plus the PCB doesn’t move around as it’s being held by the original metal pegs. No soldering of any kind, obviously.

With the latest changes to the PCB I got it working pretty well, so well in fact I will offer that overclock option I mentioned to speed up loading times. And now it’s even better than 10% πŸ™‚ I’ve tested a few dozen games with it on and everything loaded just fine. It’s completly optional though. Now I plan to order just a few PCBs to assemble by hand for the final check, and try to sell them. If there are no problems I will make a bigger batch. I still expect this batch to be small, while the PCB is bigger and considerably more expensive for me. Shipping will be somewhat more expensive too. Expect a bit higher price than usual, for now I think 150 Euro will cover everything.

Speaking of prices, I did take a look at non-Marty FM Towns machines. Well, I didn’t much like what I saw. For now I’m going to try getting a broken unit and attempting a repair – though I’m not very optimistic about that. But at the very least I will have some spare parts and something to study closer, since I have to figure out the connectors, where and how to put the ODE, etc. But a good, working FMT box is about 800 Euros (and full sets go for way more), and worse yet there are at least 3 distinct kinds: The original one with vertical CD drive, the U* versions that had the monitor built-in and a more typical tray drive, and the later 486 horizontal desktops. Which apparently also got an upgraded x2 speed drive at some point. I’m not even going to bother with the late Pentium and above models.
So chances are all these have different drives with different protocols, and I’m not buying one of each to verify that. Not at these prices plus I really have no space for any of it. So, those of you that want FMT ODE, any ideas on what to do about it? Please leave comments.

EDIT: GDEMU orders are now open closed. As usual please allow a few days for processing.

    • I just did as well. Is it that simple? Now we wait for?

  1. What all I’m getting is Preorders are currently closed. been refreshing every 2 mins!

      • hey buddy. If there ends up being a waiting list, contact me and let me know.

        Thanks gdemu

      • Thank you for you’re response, looks like you’re correct. I’m up anyways so no biggie.

  2. Make sure you’re on the GDEMU ordering page and not Rhea or something else.

  3. Seems like I just missed it. Sadly I thought there would be a post notifying pre orders being opened. I missed the edit to this post. 😦

    • I personally kept the ordering page for the GDEmu on my script along with the main page. I too thought it would be a new post but I got a little paranoid after missing it a couple times.

  4. How do I order the GDEmu, I have been watching this site for months now and the preorders are never open, I even checked at night 😦 is there no easier way to get in contact and order one, I am from germany by the way and I do run a gaming channel on twitch and YouTube. I would do a whole indepth and review on it if I even get the chance to order one.

    • You have to be around when he opens up the orders. The last two times we have only gotten the day it would be open but not the time. This time around orders opened on Saturday 2/24/18 3:00 AM PST. It remained open for 35 minutes. During that time you fill out the contact form and you’ll later receive a Paypal invoice to pay for it. Good luck!

  5. What time did the sale open? I obviously missed the window…..maybe next time

  6. Missed them again 😦 Would it be possible to join a waiting list? 😦

    • There are no waiting lists for the GDEMU, Phoebe or Rhea. He has explained his reasons why several times and he’s NOT going to change his mind. You have to be here to order them when they become available or you don’t get one. Sucks when you miss out, but the payoff is all that much sweeter when you finally get it!

  7. Darn, missed it! Hoping to get one next time for my husband.

  8. Damn. How am I supposed to know when sales are up? Any advice? Or should I just spend 500 bucks on scalper?

    • Orders opened at precisely 5 AM central US time this time around. The past two times have been between 5-5:15 AM as well. What you want to do next time is go to the Ordering>Ordering GDEMU page (or Rhea, Phoebe whatever is going to be available) and leave that open with a browser plugin like Super Auto Refresh set to 10 seconds.

I like to leave that open fullscreen and do something else in a second windowed browser on top of it and to the side so I can keep an eye on the order page. Don’t listen to these people that say ordering these ODEs is difficult, it’s not. They are basically complaining that they lost a competition that they didn’t bother to show up on time for. Simply watch the site for 15 minutes at the correct time and you’ll get one next time.

      • I just wanted to echo these comments. I’m sure there’s been some luck, but I’ve been able to get an ODE each time I’ve tried as well. Here’s some tips for some of you that keep missing out.

        1) Subscribe to and read this blog. Everytime GDEMU makes a new post I get an e-mail notification and this is how I catch first wind of when he plans on opening up the next batch of ODEs for sale.

        2) Comment on the post where he specifically mentions what day he is going to open up pre-orders and make sure to check the “notify of new comments” checkbox before submitting. Now basically anytime someone comments on the post you’ll get notified.

Unfortunately you don’t get notified when GDEMU edits his post, which is what he does when he opens up pre-orders, but most people will comment when they submit an order and that’s your cue to jump on.

        3) Have your web browser open to the ordering page of whatever device is going on sale. This is where you’ll be entering your info for purchase. Don’t waste time refreshing the main blog post and then navigating from there.

        4) Stay up and stay connected. Yes for some of you this means a sleepness night, but as Michael mentioned there tends to be a pattern recently where these things go on sale ~6am ET.

Manually refreshing the ordering page is good, but it’s not the only option. Personally what I do is turn up the volume on my phone to the max. That way if there’s a comment from someone that orders are open or that they submitted their order it will alert me (even wake me if I dozed off) and then all I have to do is refresh the page and I’m in. I know not everyone is a light sleeper, but it works for me.

I know some people go as far as using sites/apps that monitor web page changes and alert you, but from what I can see that costs money for an option that will monitor sites very frequently.

Anyways, hope that helps some of you. I know it’s not perfect and a lot depends on people commenting on the post to notify you that orders are open, butI don’t mind giving away the “secret sauce” at this point since I’ve had some success.

        Good luck everyone!

      • Thanks! I’ll definitely try this next time. Thank you too More Than Meets The Iris!

    • I would never pay the ridiculous prices that these scalpers want! What they are doing doesn’t help the retro gaming community.

Be patient and keep trying you will eventually get one.

  9. RE: FM Towns ODE, I guess I’d just say that the vertical drive variation is the most common. Personally, I’d like to see it built for that. Regardless of the CPU config, the ODE should be the same as those had the same main boards. I do not know about the all-in-one and later models, as you mentioned.

  10. Does anyone use GDmenu with a 256GB SD card? If so how well does it work? I ask because right now I only use a 64 GB card with about 50 games on it and the initial start up loads pretty slow I assume because of the pictures of the discs being loaded. I wonder if you had 200 games would it not get completely bogged down?

    • I experienced that issue with an older version of GDMenu (v0.5?). I’m using a 512gb Sandisk Extreme Pro SD Card with GDMenu v0.6. I have all the US Dreamcast games on it and there is no slowdown at start up.

      • I’ve only ever used GDMenu v0.6, but I am using the Sandisk Ultra series (slightly slower) not the Extreme Pro. Maybe I’m being impatient with the initial start up times, but I think a GDMenu Lite that’s more minimalistic like RMenu would be nice.

      • The read speed is 80MB/s. I can’t find the write speed listed anywhere. It’s a UHS-I card.

      • With a 512GB card is there enough space to have the US library AND any japanese or european exclusives?

      • I’ve got all the US games, 34 Japanese games that are translated or playable without knowing japanese, 19 Homebrew releases (like Counter Strike, Half Life Pier Solar etc.) and several emulators (2600, NES, SNES, SMS, Game Gear, Neo Geo, Genesis) with room to spare on the 512gb. Expensive, but was worth it for me. I couldn’t get the European PAL games to play on my set up. Using a NTSC Japanese Dreamcast.

    • It looks like I spoke to soon when I made this original post. I’ve been constantly changing what games are on the SD card. I think that 2 block save file for GDMenu acts as some sort of cache, because once I left the SD card as is and had VMUs inserted the GDMenu started loading the games list near instantly. My mistake.

  11. I already got a GDEMU at the previous pre-order, anxiously waiting for a Phoebe pre-order 😊

  12. Yay! Invoice arrived and paid! Can’t wait to do this again in 2 weeks for Phoebe! Then after that hopefully the PCEngine drive replacement will work with my Duo-R still haven’t read any confirmed yes or no for that one. Looking a DocBrown too!

    • Hey Jordan, did you recap yourself or buy the Duo-R already capped?

      • I bought it recapped, all old consoles could use recap, some just need it more immediately. All electrolytic capacitors will eventually leak and fail. So on decades old consoles, its good preventative maintainence. Even better if they can be recapped with an equivalent solid state capacitor. I am in the process of upgrading my equipment and practicing to be able to do my own for other consoles. If you are going to collect retro electronics and don’t have a ton of $$ to pay someone else, its a really good skill to have.

    • Its kind of random. When he has a few ready to go he will post. Usually he says when they will go on sale ahead of time, but not always. It seems to usually alternate between gdemu and rhea/phoebe but once again not always. It is best to just regularly check the site.

      • Thanks for the reply. Yeah just missed it this weekend, although getting a Phoebe is my priority at the moment since those games a stupid expensive.

    • It can be quite a while between GDEmu batches go on sale, There was a batch of them on sale last month but the time before that seems to be October 2017. I think there were a few left over from the last batch which is probably why there was a new batch sold this month. So it could be anywhere between 1-4 months, He doesn’t have a set timetable and alternates between GDEmu, Phoebe & Rhea, possibly adding in the FMT ODE into this mix in the very near future judging by his recent posts πŸ™‚ !

One thing I have noticed however is that he seems to put Phoebe & Rhea on sale not too long after a GDEmu batch.

  13. Anyone try the Fan Translations on Rhea or Phoebe for SF 3 Scenario 1,2,3 or Policenauts?
    All working?

      • Hoping someone can confirm the same thing for Phoebe. SF2 I get black screen.

      • I can’t comment on the SF3 scenarios, but Policenauts, Dragon Force 2 translations both work on the Phoebe. I’ve tried hundreds of games and they all have worked, including obscure things like the Deep Fear US Prototype and the Asuka 120% Limit Over hack.

  14. One more time, I can’t pre order a gdemu. Unfortunnately.
I Hope you will be able to release more gdemu because it’s very hard to have one and some bad guy enjoy that ; resend it more costly than you…

Have you project to update your already amzing software for gdemu ? I’m thinking about bleem!! (i know I ask this request each time but I’m a very huge fan of that ^^)

Anyway thanks for your amazing work πŸ™‚

  15. Hello
I was able to fill out the gdemu form last Saturday but haven’t gotten a payment request yet.
    Please let me know. Thanks

  16. Have all invoices gone out? I submitted my info when orders went live and haven’t received anything yet. It’s ok if they haven’t all gone out yet, I just want to make sure I made it in the queue. There’s no urgency. Thanks!

  17. Hi,
Do you think Mr.Gdemu could make a similar device for gamecube? I would love it. Do you folks?
Btw, if anyone have a qoob pro chip to selllet me know please.

    • You can play Gamecube on a Wii or WiiU using a hard drive so there wouldn’t be much point.

      • Just because there is backwards compatibility doesn’t mean you just cross that ODE off the list. Some people still prefer playing their Gamecube. Just like the Playstaion and PS-IO.

      • Some people don’t have or want to play on a Wii/WiiU. I have all those systems, but I prefer to play the GCN’s games on original hardware.

Also, and this is a big one, the GB Player.

  18. Received my GDEMU unit this morning, thanks very much for what you do πŸ™‚

    • Awesome, what country are you in? Waiting on mine to the USA.

    • Awesome, what country are you in? Waiting on mine to the USA.

  19. If I could get a FMT 486 model to you, could you figure something out?

  20. I wonder if this is considered the first or second week of march? Lol – /phoebe-countdown

  21. The PC Engine ODE that you are developing is good also for PC Engine Duo-R?

  22. my GDEMU has arrived! I have been trying fairly unsuccessfully to move files over to it however. I got a few to work (rename all tracks to “trackxx”) but most show up in GDMENU as “unsupported”.. any ideas?

And I tried SD Card Maker, but it keeps faulting out saying it can’t find the file (unhandled exception) in dot.net.

    Thanks!

    Matt

    • I got this figured out – it looks like the images I had were just bad.

  23. Thank you very much for the oportunity to keep old systems alive.
I hope we will have an ODE for my beloved GameCube =)

    • hhw can i ask these guys for a GDEMU for dream cast dig ide reborn mod need other
